It is one of the finest terroirs in the Champagne region and is the realm of “blanc de blancs” champagnes (champagnes made from white grapes – chardonnay). The Diebolt family has lived in Cramant since the end of the 19th century and the Vallois family has been cultivating vines in Cuis since the 15th Century.

Charles Heidsieck is one of the most admired Champagne houses thanks to the unrivaled and consistently high quality of its wines. Founded in 1851 by the man who would become known as ‘Champagne Charlie’, this family-owned house is the smallest of the Grandes Marques. Their size, and commitment to excellence, has been underpinned by a winemaking team that between them have been named ‘Sparkling Winemaker of the Year’ at the International Wine Challenge fifteen times. Charles Heidsieck has built exceptional relationships with the best growers across Champagne. Precise selection of grapes takes place from 60 specific sites. Vineyards which are integral to producing grapes that sustain the house style are Oger for Chardonnay for its texture, floral notes and ageing ability, Ambonnay for Pinot Noir for its power, vinosity and fruit, and Verneuil for Pinot Meunier for its acidity, body and aromatics.  After the first fermentation, the wine is racked to separate the lees and then undergoes malolactic fermentation to soften the natural acidity. After blending, using 40% reserve wines which have an average age of 10 years, the cuvée is bottled and selected yeast added to begin the second fermentation. The bottles are placed in the cellars at a temperature of 10°C. In order to achieve the depth and complexity required by the house style, Charles Heidsieck age their Non-Vintage champagne for at least five years before disgorging, much longer than the legal requirement of 15 months.

Pierre Paillard: La Grande Récolte Bouzy Grand Cru Extra Brut 2006

Grapes: Pinot Noir (50%), Chardonnay (50%)Photo May 10, 9 06 50 PM

Disgorged: November 2016

Dosage: 2.5 g/l

Color: Golden, many fine bubbles

Nose: Green Apple

Palate: Bright, Apple, Lemon

Finish: Moderate to long as the fruit continues

This is a very pleasant and easy drinking champagne. I expect that further time in the cellar would soften the brightness a bit and perhaps bring out some toasty notes.

Charles Mignon (Epernay): “Cuvee Comte de Marne Brut Grand Cru”

img_7237Grapes: Pinot Noir (55%), Chardonnay (45%)

Color: Golden, abundant fine bubbles

Nose: Full floral notes

Palate: Complex floral and citrus notes

Finish: Pinot fruit and Chardonnay freshness

This is a family favorite. We have visited Charles Mignon on both of our trips to the Champagne region. It is a non-vintage champagne with a balanced pinot noir and chardonnay blend, aged for 3 years in the cellar. The light yellow color and moderate bubbles make for an easy drinking, classic champagne experience. It has sweet citrus notes on the nose and a complex, floral taste. These characteristics combine to make a well balanced cuvée.
